ISTHISTHEFUTURE recently caught up with LA, Body Artist ’2BLOK ONE’ to ask how he entered the world of bodypainting … this is what he had to say…..
ISTHISTHEFUTURE: “Nice to meet you 2BLOK, please introduce yourself”
2BLOK: “I’m a local graffiti writer from San Fernando valley, Los Angeles and growing up in L.A. I was always intrigued by all of the art that would surround me I was always be inspired by all the murals in my neighborhood/ I never understood the exact purpose of graffiti but I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Then the day came when I just did my part and started getting into it I grew a passion for the street, I felt free creating my style and becoming a different person, it would separate me from other people and made me unique.”
ISTHISTHEFUTURE: ” How long ago did you get started in Graffiti?”
2BLOK: “I started painting walls in ’08 and from there I started evolving my techniques and creating everything I would image in my world . As time went by I started talking to other painters from my part of the city, one of the first graffiti painters I met was K35, he’s a well known artist he took me under his wing and should me around plus in the same time he became a father figure. It took time getting accepted from well known artists. I started painting on canvases and got into characters and doing portraits but I always had graffiti behind it.”

ISTHISTHEFUTURE: “How did you make the transistion in to Graffiti BodyArt?”
2BLOK: “At around the same time I met K35 I got to know SOGR UNO, he’s a well known and upcoming body artist we became friends quickly. He introduced me to the world of body art. I Learned how to manipulate acrylic paint and using different mediums and everything that paint would stick on, specially beautiful girls. From the first time I painted a model and using their wonderful body’s as canvas made me push myself to different levels, always perfecting my body art. Every time I get a chance to do body art I try to do something different and I love going big using every part of the body I can.” “I’m always looking forward to the next body art event or photo shoot this is what I live for.”

Seven years with BANKSY – Robert Clarke

Seven years with Banksy – Robert Clarke

[pinit]

Seven Years With Banksy is an illuminating memoir of the world’s most celebrated and mysterious graffiti artist, offering a unique insight into his life and work through the experiences that he and author Robert Clarke shared together during Banksy’s formative years.

Seven Years with Banksy Book - Robert Clarke

Clarke takes us through his first encounters with Banksy, which took place in a hotel in New York in the 1990s, and candidly describes how his friendship with this young English artist developed.

“He was outrageous, he was everywhere, like a nocturnal tomcat on the prowl. He saw the city’s ripped backsides at an hour of night that not many of us are privy to”

Clarke takes us through his first encounters with Banksy – two Bristolian Englishmen hanging out in 1990s New York – and later times spent with him in London (and London Zoo!), Bristol and Glastonbury. Along the way, the readers discover more about the elusive man, the influences that shaped his art, what makes him tick and why he rejects fame in favour of anonymity.

“The guy was a crow, he didn’t stand out . . . He could blend in or out at will as if he had an invisibility cloak”

Seven Years With Banksy includes 32 pages of glossy images showcasing Banksy’s work – including exclusive and unpublished material from the author’s personal archive.

“He doesn’t just think for himself, he puts it out there for all to see, to reject, to agree with, be provoked by, enlightened by – all of that stuff.”

The book is a must for anyone interested in the mystery man behind the stencils.

JR meets ‘The Invisible Man’, Liu Bolin….

Posted on 19/03/2012 by MaZe
The above short video is of a collaboration between Chinese visual artist Liu Boilin and french Street Artist ‘JR’ which took place on the weekend of 17/18th March 2012. Street Art fans will know ‘JR’ but who is Liu Bolin?  Liu Bolin “The Invisible Man” is a bodypainter with a difference, he paints on top of clothes and uses himself as a blank canvas. Best known for his series of performance photography Hiding in the City, body paintings that allow him to camouflage himself amongst various backgrounds.

Bolin claims his creations make a statement about his place in society and sees himself as an outsider whose artistic efforts are not always valued, especially in his native China.

liu-bolin

Standing silently in front of his chosen scene, in locations all around the world and with a little help from an assistant, he paints his body to merge as seamlessly as possible with what is behind him. Liu belives this shows how a city surroundings affects people living in them. He is also quoted to add that the inspiration behind his work was a sense of not fitting in to modern society and was a silent protest against the persecution of artists.

Leon Rainbow – Trenton, NJ

Posted on 14/03/2012 by MaZe
Leon Rainbow is an artist in Trenton NJ who creatively combines graffiti, street art and other artistic forms into innovative projects and events. He reaches out to wide audience, from galleries to the walls of inner cities.
Maturing spiritually and artistically, Leon realizes that his art is a channel for deeper expression. He applies fine arts composition and principles to his work which allows him to react and visually educate on social issues and current events. He uses styles that his young audience can relate to and designs his visual media with a powerful spiritual message. Leon believes that his approach allows him to reach a wide variety of people: “Anyone who looks at my art sees something beautiful – it might just be color, shape or form – or they can tune into the narrative. My goal is to make art that resonates on several levels.”

Leon’s most recent venture body painting combines his street influenced art and the female form. He integrates graffiti, street art with brush and sponge techniques to create vibrant works that appear as if it was ripped off the street and pasted onto a body. In many of his shoots he paints a graffiti background to match the body painting or vice versa. This process communes the model and the environment, graffiti and body art to make a fresh new piece. Leon continues to progress and push the limits of graffiti and body painting.

The ‘making of’ Panic Room – TILT

Posted on 13/03/2012 by MaZe

A few weeks ago ISTHISTHEFUTURE shared some great pictures of TILT’s ‘Split Personality’ Panic Room . A Room that TILT / Tober / Grizz / Don Cho painted at the Hôtel “Au vieux panier”, in Marseille, France. Now Director Benjamin Roudet of Big Addict has been released a video which documents the ‘making of’.

TILT panic room - video - the making of

IN TILTS OWN WORDS “The Hotel Au vieux panier asked me to design a room, I first told them that I wasn’t interested doing just decoration in the room but I wanted to create something that will look more like an installation. I thought about it also as a huge canvas where I needed to think about the composition and play with the empty white part of the room to accentuate more the idea of Chaos on the other part. Then I asked my friend Tober who gat a great old school style for tags, Grizz who is also the man behind the camera and Don Cho who is a Hip Hop singer from Marseille but who used to be a tagger from my home town Toulouse. It took one week to do the whole thing cause the idea was to exaggerate what you can usually see in some abandoned places. Too much tags, too much drips, too much sentences, too much throw ups … What I also wanted to show is that people can appreciate any type of graffiti, even the more basic, it’s just a matter of point of view …!
